Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Vs
Austin Trout
Saul
Alvarez defended his WBC light-middleweight title and claimed the WBA and ring
magazine belts with a unanimous points decision over American Austin Trout in
San Antonio. The first round saw both fighters keeping their distance with
Trout delivering the first meaningful blow with a jab to Alvarez’s head.
However Alvarez won the won round after stringing together several
combinations. In the second round Alvarez delivered a series of body blows in
which he dominated the action and took the round. Alvarez left trout staggered
in the third after a left hook to the body in which the American had to stop
and wince. Trout managed to pull himself together and delivered several body
blows. The fourth saw trout stunned after Alvarez delivered a left hook to his
head. After several rounds of both fighters trading blows the seventh round had
the fights first knockdown with Alvarez catching Trout flush to the chin with a
powerful straight punch. Trout stumbled a few steps before falling to the
canvas. The Mexican continued to deliver telling blows to Trout and had him
staggering twice more before the round was out. With Alvarez up through eight
rounds he went defensive and saw the fight out comfortably with winning scores
of 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109.
Nathan
Cleverly vs Robin Krasniqi
Nathan
Cleverly defended his WBO light-heavyweight title after a one-sided points
victory win over Robin Krasniqi at Wembley Arena with scores of 120-108 (twice)
and 119-109. The Welshman started the fight well with long right hands that had
his opponent momentarily stunned. The fourth saw more big shots from Cleverly
who had Krasniqi rocked from a right uppercut. Round five was dominated by
Cleverly although when the pair traded blows the Welshman seemed to be quite
easy to hit. Only the bell saved Krasniqi in the tenth as Cleverly began to unload.
The final two rounds were uneventful as Cleverly went on to a comfortable win. This
was the Welshman’s fourth defence of his title. Cleverly’s target now is to
clean up his weight class with a possible fight against WBA champion Beibut
Shumenov and then a dream fight against Bernard Hopkins.
Tyson Fury
vs Steve Cunningham
Tyson Fury
recorded a seventh-round stoppage victory over Steve Cunningham on his American
heavyweight debut. However it wasn’t all plain sailing for Fury after he was
sent to the canvas in the second round and looked in all sorts of trouble. But
the Mancunian regrouped well to eventually wear down his opponent. Fury’s weight advantage showed as he walked
down and overpowered his opponent. After
being knocked down instead of easing his way back in Fury went full out
offensive and made his size count. With Fury constantly pressing Cunningham was
finding it very hard to keep his opponent at bay and in the seventh Fury found
a savage short-range right to the jaw that ended the contest.
