Carl Froch
gained sweet revenge over rival Mikkel Kessler with a unanimous points victory
in yet another epic battle between the two at the o2 arena in London. As the
first bell rang both fighters were throwing stiff jabs whilst trying to find
their range and at the end of the first round Froch briefly had Kessler
backpedalling after a flurry of punches. The second round was a good one for Froch
as he landed some good jabs and momentarily had Kessler troubled after a right
hand. The Dane was struggling to get himself in the fight and the third was a
big round for Froch as he was landing punches from all angles and had Kessler
off balance after another barrage of telling punches. However it was only a
matter of time before the Kessler from the first fight showed up and in the
fourth and fifth rounds the Viking warrior landed a thudding left hook and body
shot. In the sixth round Froch responded with a big right hand that ripped into
Kessler, however the dane responded with a massive left hand. It was Kessler
who was now looking the sharper and was producing some nice work. As Kessler
threatened to take control of the fight it was Froch who came back strong in
the seventh after a left hook drew blood from Kessler’s nose and then he was
left with wobbling legs after some ferocious right hands were fired at him. The
pair was now trading blows with both fighters landing heavy punches. Froch was
looking as though he had more in the tank than Kessler as he was shrugging off
the Danes best punches. The defiant Kessler however produced some crisp right
hands in the ninth but failed to produce in the next round. In the eleventh
Froch was throwing crisp and accurate jabs and looked well on his way to
victory but a countering right hand from Kessler caught him off guard which
left him wobbling, somehow Froch managed to stay upright and continue. The
final round saw the brit pouncing on Kessler after a left hand in which Froch
unloaded a flurry of punches on his opponent that left the referee looking
concerned. Kessler made it to the final bell.
The fight was another epic battle and both men showed what great warriors they
are. Froch deservedly took the verdict with scores of 118-110, 116-112 and
115-113. The Nottingham man added the WBA belt to his IBF title and is now looking
for a possible rematch against Andre Ward.
