The Weekends Boxing!

Lucas Matthysse vs Lamont Peterson
Lucas Matthysse put in a scintillating performance and confirmed himself as one of the most feared men in boxing after stopping Lamont Peterson in just three rounds. The first round saw both fighters settling into the fight and a wary Peterson kept out of range of his opponent. However in the second round Peterson tried to get closer to Matthysse and felt the sheer force of the Argentinian. Matthysse landed a big right hand that sent Peterson into the ropes and after a short exchange of punches a left hook to Petersons temple saw him hit the canvas. The wobbly-legged American managed to make it to the bell. Everyone sensed that this fight wouldn’t last much longer and early in the third round Peterson was on the floor again after another shuddering left hook. A brave Peterson struggled to his feet and was allowed to continue despite many feeling the ref should have already waved it off. A right-left combination which wasn’t of much power sent Peterson to the ground straight away and for the final time. It was a truly ground shaking performance by Matthysee who has surely guaranteed himself a shot at WBC and WBA champion Danny Garcia.

Devon Alexander vs Lee Purdy
The dream that Lee Purdy was looking for didn’t happen as Devon Alexander clamed a TKO victory in the seventh round. From the start Alexander set the tone and was off loading shots at will. Purdy’s high guard and lack of movement made him an easy target and Alexander was landing some hard body shots and uppercuts in the early rounds. Alexander’s speed was all too evident as Purdy continued to take blows with a bloodied nose in the third. The Brit provided some fight back in the fifth after he connected with upper cuts and a solid right. However it was back to normal for Alexander in the sixth after Purdy took a large amount of shots but gave nothing back. After another round of spiteful blows Purdy’s corner that was headed by British middleweight Darren Barker decided to pull their fighter out. Purdy made his frustrations known and was clearly distraught but you couldn’t argue that Barker had made the right decision for his friend and gym-mate. You can’t argue with Purdy’s heart and courage but Alexander was just that bit better.

Anthony Ogogo vs Edgar Perez
On his American debut Anthony Ogogo impressed with a unanimous points decision over Edgar Perez. Ogogo looked sharp from the start and produced six rounds of solid skilful boxing. To be fair to Perez he took everything that Ogogo threw at him but the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist was just a different class. The final scores were 60-54, 60-54 and 60-53
