Saturday
night saw a shock result in Marcos Maidana beating Adrien Broner to claim the
WBA Welterweight title. Maidana claimed a unanimous points decision after twice
knocking down the American. Broner who went into this fight as the hot
favourite and with a perfect record of 27-0 was on the back foot from the start
as the big hitting Argentine briefly had him in trouble in the first after an
overhand right. After seeing Broner get hit one to many times in his last fight
against Malignaggi many thought that against a big puncher he could be in
trouble and in the second round that proved the case as Maidana sent his
opponent crashing into the ropes. Broner beat the count and managed to smother
Maidana and make it to the bell. However Broner regained his composure and
started to show his class as he worked his way back into the contest producing
some accurate work. By round six the American looked to be on top of the fight
although Maidana was still posing a big threat when he got his opportunity. With
Broner starting to control the fight Maidana stunned his opponent in the eighth
with a combination of vicious punches to the head and body, which had Broner
down for the second time in the fight. He once again was up on his feet but the
fight was now back in the hands of Maidana as the Argentine went on to visibly
hurt his man in rounds nine and ten. Some fighters as flash and brash as Broner
sometimes lack courage and heart but the young American showed he had both as
he went after Maidana in the last round to try and secure the stoppage he so
badly needed. However Maidana kept his opponent at bay and went on to
deservedly get the judges decision with scores of 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109
in his favour. For Broner this fight
will hurt him and his reputation more than any other fighter when they lose
because of all things he said about himself. He was meant to be the next Floyd
Mayweather and branded himself on being the next biggest thing in boxing. It’s
now uncertain what is next for Broner but he will need to get back into the
ring soon to repair his career and reputation.
