The past
weekend saw two British fighters in the form of Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora win
their respective fights, which will quite possibly line them up for a big domestic
heavyweight clash against each other in the near future.
Tyson Fury Vs Joey Abell |
There is
never a dull moment when Tyson Fury fights after he produced an entertaining
stoppage win over Joey Abell. This was Fury’s first fight for almost 10 months
after two planned fights with David Haye fell through. Although Fury produced
flashes of his talent he did look out of shape and sluggish at times. On more
than one occasion Abell broke Furys defences and had is opponent troubled.
However as always Fury showed tremendous heart and produced some brilliant work
when jab followed by a rapid right dropped Abell in the third. Abell shakily
got to his feet and was dropped again by another big right. It looked all but
over until the bell spared him. In the fourth
Fury appeared to be on the brink of victory to then be caught by a big right,
which had him wobbling. Fury showed tremendous courage in coming straight back
at Abell with a barrage of punches on the ropes that left Abell falling to the
canvas. Again Abell got back onto his feet, only for Fury to unload another
barrage of punches, which sent Abell to the canvas for the fourth time. The
referee then stepped to give Fury the win that moves him closer to a rematch
with Dereck Chisora.
Dereck Chisora vs Kevin Johnson |
Dereck Chisora produced an impressive and dominant point win
over Kevin Johnson. Johnson was working the jab from early on only for Chisora
to shrug them off and land his big right hook. Johnson who has earned a
reputation for being a tough opponent was feeling the effects of Chisora’s big
punches and looked in trouble as he was taking punishment on the ropes in the
fourth round. A massive right hand from
Chisora in the fifth floored Johnson, he staggered to his feet only to soak up
more vicious punches from Chisora. Johnson then went into defensive mode and
denied Chisora the chance of a stoppage victory. Johnson did stage a late stand
with some good combinations only for Chisora to dig deep and land some more telling
hooks to finally win by a unanimous points decision. The judges rewarded
Chisora for his efforts with scores of 118-109, 118-110, and 118-109.
