The Weekends Picks...

Ricky Burns Vs Terence Crawford

Ricky Burns reign as WBO Lightweight champion comes to an end as Terence Crawford wins by a unanimous points decision. Burns who came into this fight as the underdog and lucky to still be the champion after a controversial draw against Raymundo Beltran in his last fight was humble in defeat and admitted that the best man won. Crawford who came into this fight with an unbeaten record looked sharp and displayed his talents throughout the fight. The American was constantly switching from orthodox to southpaw and was consistently landing, whilst burns was struggling to find his range and looking second best throughout the fight.  As usual the Scotsman showed tremendous heart but just had no answer for Crawford’s Skill set and talent.  In the final round Crawford looked as though he could force an early finish but was happy to keep a cool head and wait for the final bell. The judges scored the fight 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112 in favour of Crawford.  Burns has been a great champion and hopefully he gets a rematch to try and win back the belt.

Anthony Joshua Vs Hector Avila

Anthony Joshua disposed of Hector Avila in just 134 seconds to win his fifth fight as a professional. A year ago Avila took Derick Chisora to nine rounds but wouldn’t be getting anywhere near that when he walked onto a left counter. The chopping blow sent him flat on his back and with the referee starting the count it was soon apparent that the bout was over. Joshua is still yet to get beyond the second round since he turned pro. It’s quite clear that Joshua is a tremendous talent and there is no doubt that if he continues to work hard and keep a level head he will achieve big things.
