Saturday night was without doubt a night that any British
boxing fan will never forget. A roaring crowd of 80,000 saw Carl Froch
successfully defend his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles along with
stoppage wins for Anthony Joshua, Kevin Mitchell, Jamie Mcdonnell and James
DeGale.
After all the controversy of the first fight there was no
doubt who the winner was between Carl Froch and George Groves this time after a
devastating right hand from Froch in the eighth round left Groves helpless on
the canvas. It was a completely different Carl Froch who turned up for the
rematch, in which the Nottingham man was sharp, patient and composed. Both
fighters from the start were very tactical and giving each other little
opportunity to gain an advantage. The third round saw both men exchange blows
with Froch landing a hook with Groves hitting back with a right hand. Froch was
using his jab well regularly finding the target keeping Groves from gaining
momentum. Froch was looking the better man controlling the centre of the ring
and forcing Groves to take risks while the Hammersmith man was on the back
foot. However Groves showed his talent in the seventh when a jab rocked Froch
backed and into his heals. Finally Groves was starting to land his right hand
frequently. By the eighth round Groves was tagging Froch and moving out of
range well. Although Froch stayed composed and resisted the temptation to jump
in, which was a key mistake he made in their first contest. With the fight
arguably 50/50 at this point Froch then crushed any hope for Groves when he
backed his opponent onto the ropes and unleashed a stunning right hand that
caught Groves flush on the chin. Groves collapsed to the canvas and after a few
seconds he tried to clamber up but was in no fit state what so ever to
continue, in which at this point the referee had already waved the fight off.
It was tremendous night for Carl Froch, a night where he could finally put the
Groves saga to bed, a night where he proved any doubters that he still has got
what it takes.
On the undercard Anthony Joshua stopped Matt Legg in the
first round with a crisp uppercut. Jamie Mcdonnell secured the WBA bantamweight
title against Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat with a big left hook in the 10th
round. Kevin Mitchell came from behind on the scorecards to stop Ghislain
Maduma in the 11th round. James DeGale looked a different class after he
stopped unbeaten American Brandon Gonzales in the 4th round. It was
an impressive performance from the 2008 Olympic champion who has now lined up a
potential fight with Carl Froch.
