Carl “The
Jackal” Frampton stuns three-time champion Kiko Martinez with a stunning
ninth-round stoppage. Frampton kept his range well throughout most of the
fight. The fight started to really heat up in the second with the Spaniard
landing a left hook but Frampton just edged it with a variety of quality shots.
In the third Martinez was more aggressive but Frampton managed to control the
fight on the back foot by often landing first with his right hook and upper
cut. Despite Frampton winning the rounds Martinez was still well in the contest
with his left hook landing several times. However what Martinez had Frampton
gave it straight back and the middle rounds belonged to the Northern Irishman.
Even though Martinez continued to battle on it was clear he was becoming
desperate as Frampton’s sharp left hooks and short rights were catching the
champion’s ever-worsening left eye. Martinez was proving though why he was
European champion with an entertaining and never give up attitude he kept on
pressing. It took many by surprise but a short right hand dropped the Spaniard
in the ninth round. As the relentless Martinez clambered to his feet and then
stumbled into the ropes it gave the referee no choice but to wave it off. It
was by far Carl Frampton’s toughest test in which he won the European
super-bantamweight title. Martinez fought well but Frampton was just too good
for him. The Jackal continues to prove that he is the real deal and move ever
closer to a world title fight.
