Saturday
night saw Adrien Broner defend his WBC lightweight title and extend his record
to an impressive 26-0 with 22 of his wins coming via stoppage after he
completely outclassed Welshman Gavin Rees inside five rounds. Rees started the
fight well with strong jabs and a good work rate that kept the young American
at bay. However the talent of Broner was clear to see and after an evenly
poised second round, it was Broner in the third that just went up another gear
and turned on the style. The sheer power and speed of Broners punches were
taking its toll on Rees with the Welshman taking a volley of headshots on the
ropes. It was the fourth round that really put Rees in trouble; a sensational
right uppercut from nowhere sent him to the canvas. Rees bravely carried on
fighting but the quality shots from Broner kept on coming with the bell coming
to the challengers rescue. Rees against his trainer’s advice carried on into
the fifth but after another round of punishing blows including a gut wrenching
body shot which sent Rees to the canvas again, trainer Gary Lockett threw in
the towel. Credit to Gavin Rees who just kept on going but Broner is in a
different league. The Americans speed, power and strength alone were just too
much for Rees. Broner is an extremely gifted boxer and if he keeps on the way
he is he should go right to the top with the current boxing greats.
