George
Groves took another step towards his dream of being a world champion with an
impressive third-round stoppage of Argentinian Dario Balmaceda at Wembley.
Groves dominated from the start and by the second round has his opponent on the
floor with a right shot to the ribs. In the third it was game over for
Balmaceda with Groves landing shots to his opponents body and head and then a
right hook which saw Balmaceda hit the canvas to then be counted out by the referee.
Groves now improves his record to 17-0 and 13 stoppages.
Darren
Barker kept up his world title hopes with a win after four rounds against
Italian Simone Rotolo. Rotolo pulled out of the fight at the end of the fourth
with a hand injury but definitely look as though he had enough after enduring
four tough rounds. Barker had his opponent on the canvas in the first round
with an overhand right and a body shot. The Italian just about managed to pull
himself together and carry on. However Barker continued to dominate and almost
had rotolo on the canvas after a flurry of punches in the fourth and when both
fighters made their way back to their corners it was no real surprise when
Rotolo retired on his stool claiming a hand injury. Barker now takes his record
to 25-1.
Hopkins Vs
Cloud:
Bernard Hopkins made history by beating his own record and becoming the oldest world champion in history again by beating Tavoris Cloud. The 48-year-old American won the IBF light-heavyweight title with a unanimous points victory over cloud. Cloud suffered a deep cut on his left eye from an accidental clash of heads which worked in Hopkins favour and the veteran went on to win the fight with scores od 117-11 and 116-112 which two judges scored the same. It’s truly a great achievement from Hopkins who just seems to keep on going.
